10 Ways to Motivate Yourself to Seek Treatment
According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, there are many ways to seek treatment. Unfortunately, you have to motivate yourself to both find treatment and go to it regularly. Usually people find their own ways to motivate themselves but with drug addiction, it is not so simple. Sometimes the drugs sap your motivation so here are some ideas on motivating yourself to seek treatment.
1. Set Small Goals
Setting small goals and accomplishing them is an excellent motivator. If you decide on small daily goals and then work towards them, you wind up with a sense of accomplishment. You can then apply this principle for seeking drug addiction treatment.
2. Do it for Your Friends
Close friends are often hurt by your addiction. Seeking treatment can help you repair your friendships and strengthen those relationships that remained. To most people seeking treatment is a positive step in this area.
3. Do it for Your Family
Your family is probably the most injured by the addiction. By seeking help you can repair your relationships with your family. Many people also engage in family counseling to further this goal. Getting your family back can be a powerful motivator.
4. Do it for Your Health
The long and short term health effects of most drugs are severe. This alone should be a powerful motivator to seek treatment. Many of the drugs on the market today can kill you even if you do not overdose on them.
5. Remember the Rewards
The rewards of being drug free are usually enough of a motivator for most people. You have better relationships with work, friends, family, and others. Drugs often kill your ability to do anything but pursue the drug. You will be free of the drug and you can now get on with your life.
6. Do it for Your Finances
Drugs are expensive. Many people lose their jobs, homes, and possessions due to this cost. It is difficult to quantify the money spent on drugs and the loss of money due to the drug. Once you are in treatment you will be saving the money you previously spent on drugs.
7. Motivate Yourself by Talking to Others in your Situation
Talking to people in your situation or who have beat the drug that you are on can also be a powerful motivator.
8. Take Away the Fear
By finding out about treatment, you can stop the fear of the unknown. You can familiarize yourself with the type of treatment that you will be able to conquer the fear of what is going to happen.
9. You can Stay Out of Jail
Many drugs are illegal. This means if you are caught with them, you will go to jail. If you are in treatment and no longer doing drugs, you no longer have to fear being caught.
