The Heroin and Opiate Epidemic
In 2014, the Governor’s Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse released a report: “Confronting New Jersey’s New Drug Problem.” The new problem? eroin/opiate use among adolescents and young adults.
According to the report, the rising use of opiates is the number one health crisis facing New Jersey. The use of prescription opioids is feeding into heroin use, as prescriptions become difficult and costly to attain and maintain. The state believes that the connections between the doctor’s office and illicit drug sales needs to be addressed with interdisciplinary and interagency coordination like that never seen before.
In 2012, the state saw over 8,300 admissions to state-licensed or certified treatment centers for patients with a pattern of prescription drug abuse. This was an increase of over 200 percent over the last 5 years and almost 700 percent over the previous decade.
If you have a prescription drug addiction or a heroin addiction, treatment will help and it is available. Don’t talk yourself out of something before you do a little research and get some of your questions answered.
Treatment Statistics: Types of Treatment
In May 2015, New Jersey released a statewide Substance Abuse Overview covering substance abuse admissions in 2013. Among other data, it revealed there were a total of 65,553 treatment admissions and 62,525 discharges reported to the Department of Human Services.
It also revealed the following about the level of care offered:

- Partial hospitalization (1,457) 2 percent
- Opioid maintenance OP (7,175) 11 percent
- Opioid maintenance IOP (401) 1 percent
- Extended care (19) 0 percent

Treatment Statistics: Age at Admission and Gender
You may be interested in learning how old people in rehab tend to be in New Jersey. The following percentages represent patient age at admission:
- Under 18 (1,658) 3 percent
- 18-21 (5,481) 8 percent
- 22-24 (7,707) 12 percent
- 25-29 (12,614) 19 percent
- 30-34 (10,245) 16 percent
- 35-44 (12,932) 20 percent
- 45-54 (10,872) 17 percent
- 55 and over (4,035) 6 percent
Incidentally, 68 percent of individuals admitted are male and only 32 percent are female. One of the reasons forwarded for the low numbers of women in treatment is that they often have a familial role that doesn’t allow them to take time away to get treatment. For example, they may not be able to leave children behind or they may be the sole breadwinner and be unable to be absent from work. But, as you can see above, there are enough types of treatment that women in New Jersey should be able to find something that works.
Treatment Statistics: Insurance
If you are concerned about seeking treatment because you don’t have insurance, you should understand that the absence of insurance is very common. The following demonstrates health insurance at admission:
- No insurance (43,371) 66 percent
- Medicaid (15,301) 23 percent
- Medicare (1,204) 2 percent
- Private Insurance (6,714) 10 percent
- Other insurance (1,877) 3 percent
Additionally, the Affordable Care Act requires individual and small group policies to offer substance abuse treatment coverage. If you have insurance, it should be covered. If you don’t have insurance, you have the option to get state funded insurance through the marketplace and that should help as well.
