How to Ask for Treatment Help
Asking for help is one of the hardest things that anyone can do. It is not easy to admit weakness or that you need something from others. This is especially true when it comes to drug addiction. Most people suffering from addiction have a difficult time admitting there is a problem, much less asking for help for it.
Identify Your Needs
One of the most important things you can do when asking for treatment help is to know what you need. You can identify your needs by reflecting on what type of help would be beneficial for you. If you do not know what your needs are, it is important to try to identify them.
Talk to Those Closest to You
Those that know you the best are often a good source of comfort and help when you need it. When asking for help go to those who are closest such as family and friends who do not use drugs. They know you and are in a position to help with valuable suggestions on options.
Ask for Opinions and Solutions
When you talk to the people closest to you ask for ideas, opinions, and solutions. You never know when one will have something valuable to say. Do not discount anyone’s idea unless it is contrary to your recovery.
Keep a List of Who you Have Approached and Who you Want to Approach
Keep track of your resources. Make a list of those you’ve talked to and those that you want to approach. When you look down this list you have an idea of those that can and will help you. Not only will you feel less alone, it creates a good reference point for when you want to start treatment.
Come up With New Ways to Seek Help
Even if you have found a few resources, try to continue to come up with new resources. You can never have too many places to turn when you need help with a drug addiction. As your friends and family to help you brainstorm about what you can do to recover from your addiction.
Make the Available Resources a Support Network
According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, one of the crucial things to have for any recovering addict is a solid support network. This is particularly true for those who’ve been through the criminal justice system. This is why it is extremely important for you to make the resources you gather your support network.
Listen to Those who are Trying to Help
When asking for help it is important to listen to those that are trying to help you. It does no good to ask for help, if you are not willing to listen to their advice. Even though not all advice is applicable, you should at least listen to what they have to say.
