Choosing a Drug Replacement Treatment Center
Choosing the correct drug replacement center can seem like a complex overwhelming prospect. With an addiction and possibly other issues, indecision can cause you not to choose one and not seek treatment. Unfortunately, in order to seek a drug replacement therapy, you have to choose a treatment center to provide that therapy.
Identify your Addiction
According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, there are many types of addiction but drug replacement only works reliably for one. That is opiate addiction. You have to identify if you are addicted to opiates or addicted to some other type of drug. Although you might suffer from multiple addictions, in order for drug replacement to work correctly you need to be addicted to:
- hydrocodone,
- opium,
- opiates,
- opioids,
- morphine,
- heroin, or
- one of the opiate derivatives.
Many medications and other drugs that contain opiates. You might not realize that the drug that withdrawal you are experiencing is actually from opiates.
Speak with your Doctor about Drug Replacement Therapy
If you are addicted to opiates speak to your doctor to find out if you are healthy enough for opiate replacement therapy. Some people can take opiate replacement drugs while others cannot. Most often the criteria includes the provisions:
- you are an opiate addict,
- you have to be an opiate addict for over a year, and
- you have to have tried other methods to quit using the opiates.
These criteria need to be met before someone will prescribe an opiate replacement drug, though there are special exceptions that allow a person to take the drugs without meeting the criteria such as severe dangerous addiction.
Decide Which Type of Drug Replacement Therapy is Right for You
There are several types of drug replacement therapy. A few of the options are:
- methadone,
- buprenorphine,
- Suboxone, and
- Subutex.
The different replacements all have slightly different properties. Which drug is best depends on your individual circumstances. It is difficult to determine which drug is right without a doctor’s help, it is a good idea to familiarize yourself with the drugs that are available.
Find a Center that offers the Type of Treatment you Want
There are hundreds of treatment centers across the country. Each of these treatment centers offers a different form of therapy, different amenities, and different locations. Choosing the correct one is extremely important for your success in recovery. Most drug treatment facilities have drug replacement therapy as well as counseling and other treatment capabilities. It is important the capabilities match your needs and wants as far as treatment is concerned. Again you can talk to your doctor about your exact needs.
