Why are there so Many Types of Addiction Treatment Centers?

There are so many types of addiction treatment centers because there are so many types of addiction. The Collaborative Research on Addiction Program, addiction is any compulsive or repetitive harmful behavior that a person cannot stop despite the harmful consequences of that behavior. There are three main types of addiction treatment centers. Most of these centers have both inpatient and outpatient programs to help their clients overcome their individual addictions. The three types of addiction are alcohol, drug, and behavioral addiction.

Alcohol Addiction

treatment center types

Each type of addiction treatment center utilizes a different strategy that works best for that specific addiction.

There are two main types of alcohol addiction behavior. Alcohol is both mentally and physically addiction. These two types are:

  • Heavy daily drinking – this type of addiction happens when a person drinks heavily and daily. They cannot do anything without having a drink first. Their bodies have become so accustom to the alcohol that it can no longer function normally without it. In order to get over this type of addiction the body first has to detox off the alcohol. Then usually the center helps the addict realize why they are drinking.
  • Binge drinking – this type of addiction is when a person drinks heavily only sometimes. There is no pattern to the behavior, they just drink for a few days or weeks and then stop suddenly. The sudden stop causes issues. They go into something called alcohol withdrawal syndrome which causes a myriad of physical and mental issues. Detox in this case can kill and must be done very carefully by a treatment center.

These two types of alcohol addiction are usually treated in the same addiction facility.

Drug Addiction

Drug addiction is another type of physical and mental addiction. Like alcohol addiction, drug addiction is treated in many of the different addiction treatment facilities. It is the second most common type of addiction behind alcohol addiction. Drug addiction is a physical and / or psychological dependence on a substance such as cocaine or heroin. These substances are addictive in nature. This type of addiction is treated through detox and counseling.

Behavioral Addiction

Behavioral addiction is usually strictly psychological. It is an addiction to a behavior such as gambling, sex, or viewing pornography. Unfortunately, this type of addiction is more difficult to treat than alcohol or drug addiction. Since it is mainly psychological in nature only counseling and behavioral therapy work to break it.

Behavioral addiction rehab centers are normally designed specifically for the behavioral addiction. There are sex addiction treatment centers, pornography addiction treatment centers, and a host of others. Each addiction generally has its own type of treatment center. Most of these centers treat one or two similar addictions.
