Excuses You Use to Keep Abusing Drugs
Everyone makes excuses but when you find yourself making excuses to continue to abuse drugs or alcohol it can be dangerous. According to the National Library of Medicine, part of drug addiction is making excuses to continue to use drugs. Some of these excuses are very common while others are relatively new.
I’ll Never Do it Again
This is a classic excuse particularly when someone is confronted with his or her drug or alcohol use. Most people have heard this excuse before.
I Can Quit Any Time
Again, this is a common excuse. Unfortunately, most people who say this cannot quit any time they want. They may even have tried to quit and failed.
It Helps Me Think
This is often an excuse for the use of stimulants. Some people believe that drugs like Ritalin and Concerta can help them think clearly. Although this is true for a short period of time, the improvement is only long term for those who suffer from Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.
It Makes Me Better at My Job
To date there is no drug that makes anyone better at their job unless it is medically prescribed for a specific function. Many people use the excuse that either stimulants or painkillers make them feel better when they work. Unfortunately, it is a sign that someone is addicted to the drug not bettered by it.
It Doesn’t Hurt Anything
Many people think that their actions do not hurt anyone. This is untrue, peoples actions affect each other. Your drug use affects your friends, your family, and your coworkers. Each person in your life is affected by your drug use.
I Just Want to Feel Better
Although drugs will make you feel better in the short term, they end up causing a lot more damage over time. They cause damage to your body, your relationships, and your overall living conditions. Most people who are addicted to drugs do not realize this until it is too late.
Everyone is Doing It
This excuse sounds like a teenagers excuse but adults use it too. The common one is everyone drinks or everyone takes some form of benzodiazepine. Although it is true that many people take these drugs not everyone has a problem with these drugs.
I Do Not Have a Problem
This phrase is indicative of the fact that you have a problem. If you have to state to someone else that you are not having a problem with drugs or alcohol then usually there is a problem and you are attempting to deny it.
If you find yourself or a loved one using any of these excuses on a regular basis, it is probably a good time to look into treatment options.
